Hello Locke Families!
I am very excited to be a part of The Locke School of Arts and Engineering staff. I can already see that this is a team that shares my heart for education and nurturing students! We still will be doing the Music and the Brain piano curriculum along with Rock Band for some of our older students.
We have developed this site so can work together to help to ensure your child’s success in their musical endeavors.
Presentation and encouragement from someone who truly cares helps build a sense of pride and self-esteem in a young child. As we dive into our lessons, I would like to thank you for recognizing the importance of music, theatre and arts in your child’s education and social development. According to Essence.com, “Research from organizations like the Arts Education Partnership proves that children exposed to the arts do a better job in traditional subjects.”
Some benefits of music in education are…
1. Develops language and reasoning
Students who have early musical training will develop the areas of the brain related to language and reasoning.
2. A mastery of memorization
The skill of memorization can serve students well in education and beyond.
3. Students learn to improve their work
Learning music promotes craftsmanship, and students learn to want to create good work instead of mediocre work. This desire can be applied to all subjects of study.
4. A sense of achievement
Students who master even the smallest goal in music will be able to feel proud of their achievement. They also tend to have higher self-esteem and are better at coping with anxiety.
5. Students learn pattern recognition
Children can develop their math and pattern-recognition skills with the help of musical education. Playing music offers repetition in a fun format.
6. Teamwork and collaboration
Many musical education programs require teamwork as part of a band or orchestra. In these groups, students will learn how to work together and build camaraderie.
My goal for the year is simple: for your child to benefit from what music can do for their mind and for them to develop a lifelong passion for music
Please do not hesitate to email me with any questions or just to introduce yourself. I can’t wait to see the changes our students make in music while we see how the music changes them!
In peace and harmony,
Ms. Yvonne
